My name is Christian and I have been a Chef for 16 years. My passion for cooking has allowed me to travel and work in lots of amazing places all around the world. I may have gotten around but believe you me I still have many countries to visit, cultures to experience and new styles of food to eat and learn how to cook. Cooking is a journey that never stops giving. One of the great things about food and cookery is that you never stop learning, there is always something somebody can teach you regardless of their experience or level.
Cooking is a journey, here is mine. I began as a dishwasher at the age of 16. I needed a new job as I was getting a wee bit old to be delivering papers. My friends eldest brother was a kitchen manager of a large franchise restaurant and had some part-time dish washing shifts available so I jumped at the opportunity. It was quite the awakening as the kitchen was somewhat of a ruthless place. The pace, the noise, the heat, the pressure. Listening to the chef control the kitchen like a composer was all I needed to get hooked. I was soon taking it upon myself to learn sections of the kitchen whilst I had no dishes to do. I moved quickly and 3 years later I was the Kitchen Manager. Now although this was no restaurant of culinary excellence it served good food and oh boy did it sell a lot of it. This place taught me the basics of cooking but taught me how to manage not only the kitchen but a large crew of team members.
After another year or so I left to go on my first traveling trip. This opened my eyes again to a whole new world. Different cultures, ways of life, foods, drinks, cooking techniques. I returned a new person with the goal of continuing to travel whilst learning to cook great food. This is when I moved to the French Alps and started doing seasonal work. I started cooking in small catered chalets, worked up to cooking in large restaurants, next I became the Executive Chef of a hotel and chalet company. At this point I was in charge of all elements of the food side of the business. I had really progressed through my cooking not only was I able to manage the kitchen and its processes but I had now learned how to really cook beautiful food and create my own delicious dishes. Now it was time to open my own business in France so I rented a beautiful Ski Chalet and sold catered holidays. The food I cooked here really was something special. Great techniques, fresh ingredients all made with care and love. It was maybe the best food I have cooked and one of the most rewarding jobs I have had. This lasted a few years before I had to shut the business, I was quite sad although it opened new doors for me to go through.
I spent some time in Japan helping some friends set up a ski lodge. This was another great experience, teaching me about new foods, cultures and allowing me to meet some amazing new friends. This all led me to the point at which I moved to the USA. I found my way up to South Lake Tahoe and the rest is history really. I am now a partner in some restaurants here and life is really great.
Why Healthy Living
I have always been passionate about food and travel and the two go hand in hand. I love to be outside, enjoying climbing, snowboarding and mountain biking and many other activities. I have recently become far more invested in fitness. I can be a bit of a gym rat and my newest fitness interest is yoga. After years of resistance training it is a nice change of pace and provides some real difficulties for me to progress through.
First and foremost I am a chef and therefore have always enjoyed teaching people to cook and giving people recipes when they have eaten a dish of mine and really loved it. I really want to continue giving back to people and using my knowledge to help them. Nowadays with healthy living becoming so prominent and frankly important, I know it can be hard to find recipes that really hone in on this mantra so I am here to sift through it all and help you find the most delicious healthy recipes. Alongside the food aspect I also want share my passions and experiences with travel and fitness. These things all tie in together to create a Healthy Lifestyle.
Here at Healthy Living our aim is simple. Provide you with delicious recipes that are also great for your mind and body. Share fitness goals and knowledge to help and inspire you to reach your goals and to share our travelling experiences. Whether you are passionate about one or all of our focuses here at Healthy Living we hope that there will be plenty for you to enjoy.
